Notes on the Fly: Arizona State University

*College campus tours are packed with information and always an amazing experience. On my blog, I share facts, information and images about the college/university that I write "on the fly" during my visits.*

Arizona State University ASU is a comprehensive public research university, measured not by whom it excludes, but by whom it Includes and how they succeed; advancing research and discovery of public value; and assuming fundamental responsibility for the economic, social, cultural and overall health of the communities it serves. First year class: 1. 14,000 2. 29% first gen 3. 3.54 GPA 4. Average SAT up 5 points from last year 5. 55% earned New American University scholarships 5th largest research university in the States. A national university - Smaller campuses allow for students to have a smaller experience. Based by design. 1. #1 in the US for innovation 2. #4 public university in the US for first year experienced 3. #4 public university in the US for undergraduate education At ASU you’ll become a universal learner, able to adapt and learn at the speed of technology. Engages with communities to encourage universal learning 1. Tempe is the top city in Arizona to start a career. 2. Scottsdale is ranked #1 place to find a job in the US 3. Mesa is ranked best big city to live in Arizona 4. Phoenix is the 5th largest city in the country 1. Downtown Phoenix campus - specific programs. Professional programs are located here. Journalism program one of the top in the country. Broadcast program. Sports journalism program. Health sciences. Very career oriented students. . 2. Polytechnic campus - STEM related, engineering programs. Maker spaces available. Bigger population of out of state students. All these campuses address different learning styles 3. Tempe campus 4. West campus - small liberal arts experience. 900 students. Quiet and small. Faculty driven. More removed from the urban experience. All campuses are covered by a shuttle. Complex in that there are many options across many campuses. Not a standardized program 1. 93% of first year A students return 2. 81% of first year B students return 3. 8.6% of first year students return to ASU their sophomore year 35,000 Pell students The students find the right fit achieve their goals during college and after graduation. Advising is comprehensive - class schedules are open and flexible and the school can manage their course load so they can stay on track. Major.courses are fulfilled by campus, but electives can be taken on any campus. Barrett Honors College is across all 4 campuses. First year class of 2000 students. Across all different degree programs. Public Service Academy - 150 students who work in public policy and social responsibility. Merit scholarships are GPA and test score based. Awards are dispersed mid October. Financial aid will be notified by mid December. Required to live on your residential college. Everyone gets housing. Beyond first year, students move off campus. Students in Tempe live within a 3 block radius. 40% of students are out of state. Nursing school - maintain 3.5 GPA. 400 hundred students. Engineering - largest engineering school in the country. Honeywell, Intel, and many companies moving here so lots of options for internships and jobs. Cost of living is low which makes AZ attractive for people looking for a new place. ACT - 24, 1140 SAT, 3.0 GPA Askbrad@asu.edu. Barrett Honors College Admit rate - 2000 students. Most students at Tempe, 1600, about 200 downtown. Acceptance rate is about 70%. This year about 50%. 1. 5500 applications last year 2. Waitlist and deny more than before 3. No minimums with a holistic review Three entry points: 1. Start as a freshman, cohorted 2. After 1 semester of college 3. Upper division students, can apply to be in for last 2 years 4. 1/3 of classes in Barrett Book ends: 1. Human event - freshman experience. Human history and all the works from humans through time. 2. Everyone does a thesis or creative project before they graduate. Doesn’t have to be in your major. Can do it before your senior year. Must have a committee of faculty to support you. 3. The rest of your time at Barrett is created by you. Have to meet with Barrett advisor. Students get priority registration. A big perk for students. 2 ways to make a class a Barrett class: 1. Any honors class will be capped at 25. Honors classes are taught by Ph.d’s. 2. Or can do contracts - regular class, ask professor if you can make it honors. Professor approves extra project and writes up a contract. 3. Scholarships for transfers available. 4. Only Barrett students can take honors classes. Barrett is a great place to take advantage of classes and internships that do not get offered to the general population. It is more of a small liberal college. Each student has 3 advisors. Academic, honors, and faculty honors. More support. A small community of students that lives together. Need a 3.25 to graduate. But no minimum to stay in. 97% retention. 70% are in state, looking for more out of state Like engagement and leadership, but are aware of special circumstances that may occur in rural areas. Letters of rec are very important. Essay’s help admissions separate the wheat from the chaff. Reside by campus. Can use facilities throughout the system, and can reside by major within the cohort.
